Inspire Video Series: Passion, Slow-Cooked

Inspiration

While workplace cultures and customs may vary from business to business, I can only assume every office has the same reaction to an All Staff email that reads, “Free food in the kitchen!” When MacBooks ping with that new message at Wray Ward, employees form a steady procession to the break room for whatever surprising treat awaits. When Wray Ward Front End Developer Justin Holt sends that message, the procession looks more like a stampede.

Justin and his brother founded Holt Brothers Barbecue, a KCBS competition BBQ team. Their venture makes Wray Ward a good place to be on Monday mornings, when Justin brings his weekend test meals to the office for sampling. Ribs. Pulled pork. Beef brisket. Mesquite beef smoked sausage. Smoked turkey breast. Slow smoked baked beans. Wow.

Sadly, Justin and his brother lost their parents in the past 10 years. Their dad tended the pits at his volunteer fire department’s quarterly fundraisers, and continuing his legacy has helped the brothers bond. It’s also inspiring Justin to grow, learn, be patient and give joy in a way he’d never imagined.

Justin says barbecuing is in his blood. Celebrating our people is in ours. We’re proud to feature Justin in our newest Inspire video, part of a series that tells the story behind the talent at Wray Ward — their passion projects, their care and love for others or their fight for something meaningful. It’s a chance for us to share our own people and the experiences that shape them in a special way. It’s also our chance to motivate others to discover a new passion or follow a longtime dream. Like Laura King Edwards, our content lead who fights for rare disease awareness. Or Dave Haire, designer, musician, dad. And now, Justin Holt.

We hope you enjoy Justin’s story — and we apologize in advance for the cravings you’re sure to have afterward.
